Mark is a professional and deeply knowledgeable about treating muscle issues and the MAT protocol....he was able to provide exercises that I was able to do at home in addition to the MAT treatments. Overall, I can't say enough good things about Mark and MAT. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to resolve nagging injuries and move better!" - John V. |

WHAT IS MUSCLE ACTIVATION TECHNIQUES?
MAT® is designed to re-establish the communication pathways between the nervous system and the muscular system in order to restore muscle contractile capabilities. The main indicator of muscle(s) losing their contractile efficiency is limitations in range of motion (ROM). Through the MAT assessment, we begin with a muscle-specific joint ROM assessment. This allows the MAT practitioner to precisely determine which muscles potentially have altered communication from the nervous system.
|
How does it work?
MAT focuses on the cause of muscle imbalances by testing, correcting, and maintaining muscle contractile efficiency. Once the cause for the discomfort and impaired mobility is identified, we use a series of muscle tests and treatments in an established process to “reactivate” the affected muscles.
|
Why is MAT unique?
MAT differentiates itself from other techniques because it never attempts to directly lengthen or change the muscle by stretching, heating, kneading, or foam rolling. MAT is not trying to “relax” muscle, but instead tries to “activate” the muscle, so that your body is better prepared to handle the forces that come from exercise and every day movements.

What is MATRx?
An MATRx Full Body Certified practitioner has completed the highest level of education and demonstrates an advanced skill set, capable of offering clients the broadest scope of treatment and the most thorough and lasting results.
|
When will I start to feel better?
There are many factors involved with the treatment timeline, including age, fitness level, injury history and overall health. Some generally fit and healthy clients may feel better in one session, but most clients start to see improvement in 3-5 sessions. MAT is a process, not a quick fix. Think of an MAT session as a very focused and specific workout, one muscle at a time. At the end of the day, it's all about getting your muscle system stronger.
|
How often should I come in?
The average MAT client has a treatment once per week, although some new clients with particularly challenging cases may opt to start with two or even three sessions per week for a couple of weeks to speed up the process. Once the client is feeling better and more stable, we may only do a session every two weeks or once per month to maintain their progress.
|
I have limited time. Should I work out or do MAT?
If you are pain free and moving well, let's work out! Some clients will come in planning to work out but woke up with some nagging discomfort or weakness from something they did earlier, so we do an MAT session. And some clients feel so good after a few minutes on the MAT table, they are ready to work out. "Half and Half" sessions are a popular choice for many regular clients.
|
Does MAT work with other treatments (Physical Therapy, massage, acupuncture, etc.)?
Absolutely. Many physical therapists and chiropractors use MAT in their practice. Ultimately it depends on how you feel after any treatment. If you feel great and everything is "on" after an MAT session, then after a massage everything is "off" and you feel worse, then we may need to hold off on getting a massage until your body can handle it.
